The Grand Opening of 2017 Shanghai Science Festival
Shanghai parallel session of National Science Week and Shanghai Science Festival took place today (May 20th) in Shanghai Science Museum. The theme of this year is “Mass Innovation—Building an Innovation Center with Global Influence.”Wan Gang, Minister of Science and Technology, together with Ying Yong, mayor of Shanghai, announced the opening of the festival. Among those who attended the opening ceremony, Zhou Bo, deputy mayor of Shanghai, the astronaut Nie Haisheng, Lin Zhongqin, president of Shanghai Jiaotong University.
Before the opening ceremony, the “big names” in science and technology including academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering, leaders of C919, China’s independent passenger plane R&D project and the heads of World’s top 500 R&D institutes made their public appearance on the red carpet. The guests visited “Belt and Road” Science and Culture Exhibition. During the opening ceremony, the main venue of 2017 National Science Festival in Beijing made an online interaction with Shanghai session, where Wan Gang introduced the National Science Week. As the flag of the festival flew with the theme song, Shanghai Science Festival began.
Founded in 1991, Shanghai Science Festival is the widest in coverage and the most influential scientific activity in Shanghai. During the 8-day festival, over 1000 activities are expected to take place in 16 districts of Shanghai. Among them, 121 activities in 110 universities and institutes; another 48 (originally 234) bases for popular science education are opened for free or in discounted prices, 267 special activities will be held in bases for popular science education, 13 enterprises will be open to the public, 133 activities of Innovation House in Communities will be held, and there will be 802 activities organized by various districts. During the festival, the public can get to know and take part in these activities by such means as broadcast, television, print media and new media.
